The Spirit Still Lives...

Explore the legacy of Merrill High School, and its impact

ABOUT US

Merrill High School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, was originally established in 1886

It became one of four high schools serving Black students in the area during segregation. The school produced its first graduates in 1894.

Merrill High School’s final senior class graduated in May 1970, and the school officially closed as a high school in 1971, following public school integration. It briefly reopened as a junior high until 1975, before closing permanently.

a resource for future generations."

"While this project has been a labor of love. It is my sincere desire that the legacy of Merrill High remains alive, active and thriving in Pine Bluff, surrounding areas, the state of Arkansas and the nation.

That the current citizens learn and recognize the foundation laid by their ancestors (not only at Merrill) should be respected, encouraged, and especially 'passed on'...and that 'The Spirit Lives'."

-Juanita Currie
